The United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT) provides technical assistance to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) which is a domestic court established in accordance with Cambodian law. The ECCC has jurisdiction to bring to trial senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea and those who were most responsible for the crimes and serious violations of Cambodian penal law, international humanitarian law and custom that were committed during the period from 17 April 1975 to 6 January 1979.

UNAKRT is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified translators to assist with the translation of legal documents from French to English. Successful candidates will be placed on a roster and their services will be requested on a remote basis according to the overall requirements of the ECCC.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Revisers in the Interpretation and Translation Unit (ITU), the Consultant translates legal documents relating to proceedings before the ECCC from French to English. Documents include but are not limited to party motions, judicial orders and decisions, evidentiary materials, reports and administrative filings. Translations are subject to revision and require experience, proficiency and/or a short turnaround time.

Competencies

Excellent translating and writing skills; high standard of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, intent, style and nuance of the original text with a good grasp of the subject matter. Knowledge and mastery of legal translation and subjects dealt with by the ECCC. Ability to use all sources of references, consultation and information relevant to the text at hand. Ability to work under pressure and maintain adequate speed and output volume. Ability to meet deadlines.

Qualifications

Education: University degree in translation, modern languages, law or a related field, or equivalent diploma.

Experience: A minimum of 5 (five) years of experience in translation or revision from French into English. Experience in the United Nations, an international or domestic criminal tribunal, international organisation or international body dealing with legal matters is required. Prior experience at the ECCC is an advantage.

Languages: The official working languages of the ECCC are Khmer, English and French. A perfect command of English, which must be the candidate’s main language, is required. The candidate must also have excellent knowledge of French. Knowledge of Khmer is an asset.

Computer skills: Good knowledge of relevant computer applications and ability to type in both English and French. Knowledge of Zylab is an asset.

Remuneration

Remuneration is based on the schedule approved by the United Nations HRPS-OHRM office, for contractual translation and typing (USD):

Text of average difficulty: $0.227 per word
Technical or more difficult text: $0.237 per word
Very difficult or urgent text: $0.247 per word

The P.11 Form should be downloaded from the UNAKRT website. Candidates under serious consideration will be shortlisted and may be invited to complete a test. Preference will be given to equally qualified female candidates. Consultancy contracts will be offered subject to judicial needs and only for the required period(s).
