The United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT) provides
technical assistance to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia
(ECCC) which is a domestic court established in accordance with Cambodian law.
The ECCC has jurisdiction to bring to trial senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea
and those who were most responsible for the crimes and serious violations of
Cambodian penal law, international humanitarian law and custom that were
committed during the period from 17 April 1975 to 6 January 1979.
UNAKRT is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified interpreters from
English to Khmer and Khmer to English. Successful candidates will be placed on
a roster and their services will be requested during specific periods of judicial hearings,
subject to their availability and the overall requirements of the ECCC judicial
chambers.
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent is under the supervision of the Interpretation and Translation Unit.
Within delegated authority, the interpreter will be responsible for the following duties:
 Providing simultaneous and consecutive interpretation from English into
Khmer or Khmer into English at judicial hearings; and
 Performing other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education: University degree or diploma in interpretation or foreign languages
(especially English), law or a related field. A relevant combination of education and
interpretation/translation experience may be taken into consideration in lieu of a
degree.
Experience: At least 5 (five) years of experience in interpretation and/or translation,
preferably including three years of interpretation and/or translation in the United
Nations, an international tribunal, an international organisation or an international
body dealing with legal matters. Prior experience in ITU or at the ECCC is an
advantage.
Languages: The official working languages of the ECCC are Khmer, English and
French. For this position, fluency in both oral and written English and Khmer are
required.
