Interpreters: English to French, French to English

The United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT) provides technical assistance to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) which is a domestic court established in accordance with Cambodian law. The ECCC has jurisdiction to bring to trial senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea and those who were most responsible for the crimes and serious violations of Cambodian penal law, international humanitarian law and custom that were committed during the period from 17 April 1975 to 6 January 1979.

UNAKRT is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified interpreters from English to French and French to English. Successful candidates will be placed on a roster and their services will be requested during specific periods of judicial hearings, subject to their availability and the overall requirements of the ECCC judicial chambers.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent is under the supervision of the Interpretation and Translation Unit. Within delegated authority, the interpreter will be responsible for the following duties:

• Providing simultaneous and consecutive interpretation from English into French or French into English at judicial hearings; and
• Performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education: A degree in interpretation, preferably from an internationally-recognised school of interpreters.

Experience: At least 5 (five) years of experience in interpretation, preferably in the United Nations, an international tribunal, an international organisation or an international body dealing with legal matters. Prior experience at the ECCC is an advantage.

Languages: The official working languages of the ECCC are Khmer, English and French. For this position, fluency in both oral and written English and French are required. Knowledge of Khmer is an asset.

Preference will be given to equally qualified female candidates. Successful candidates will be offered a consultancy contract for the required period(s) only. Special Notice

The daily remuneration rate is in line with CEB-AIIC Agreement. In addition, UNAKRT will provide applicable DSA rate and a round trip ticket (economy class) from permanent residence to Phnom Penh, Cambodia and from Phnom Penh to permanent residence upon the completion of assignment, if the individual contractor needs to travel in order to perform his or her assignment.
