Remuneration: Remuneration will be based on the applicable UN rates for freelance short-term interpreters for Cambodia and the contractual rates per thousand words of target text (in US dollars).

NB: Preference will be given to qualified female candidates.

Contractual Interpreters (English-Khmer-English) and (French-Khmer-French)
The United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT) provides technical assistance to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) which is a domestic court established in accordance with Cambodian law. The ECCC has jurisdiction to bring to trial senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea and those who were most responsible for the crimes and serious violations of Cambodian penal law, international humanitarian law and custom that were committed during the period from 17 April 1975 to 6 January 1979. A feature of the proceedings is inclusion of Civil Parties allowing Victims to participate by supporting the prosecution and to seek specific forms of reparation.
The United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials is seeking to establish a roster of qualified English-Khmer-English and French-Khmer-French interpreters for field interpretation in the on-going proceedings before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).

Duties and Responsibilities: Under the general supervision of the Coordinator of the Interpretation and Translation Unit, selected candidates will:
• Provide consecutive, liaison and whispering interpretation services for meetings, training, workshop and other events as required;
• Must aim at a high standard of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuance of the original message;
• Use all references, information and consultation resources relevant to the assignment and carry out any research required;
• Translate, subject to revision, assignment-related documents from English into Khmer and vice versa or from French to Khmer and vice versa, respecting deadlines and using appropriate terminology;
• Perform other associated duties as required.
Competencies: Proven ability to interpret consecutively.

Qualifications:
• University degree in interpretation, modern languages, law or a related field or an equivalent diploma.
• A minimum of five years of experience in interpretation from English into Khmer and vice versa or from French to Khmer and vice versa. Experience in court interpretation would be considered an asset.
• A perfect command of Khmer, which must be the candidate’s main language, is required. Must also have an excellent knowledge of English or French.
• Good knowledge of relevant computer applications, ability to type in both English and Khmer or French and Khmer.
Assessment Method
Qualified short-listed candidates will be requested, as part of the evaluation process, to undertake an interpretation and translation test.
